Explorer Post 124

Post 124 of Herndon,
Virginia, grew out of a very different kind of Girl Scout troop. Troop
124 members were avid campers and backpackers. In fact, they were the first
all female crew to hike the Lenhok'sin Trail at Goshen Boy Scout Camp.
They returned twice more, taking one summer in between to hike the 184
miles of the C&O Canal Trail. For their third summer on Goshen's trail,
the group chartered as an Explorer Post. When camp was over, the girls
decided to open the Post to ALL youths.
Since then co-ed Post 124 has camped with the wild ponies at Assateague
Island, gotten snowed-in on a winter camping trip, gone underground with
cave guides, annual
ski trips, relived a bit of history hiking along the C&O Canal,
sailed and snorkeled the Florida Keys from aboard Sea Base's Coral Reef
sailboats, and we aren't finished yet! From the beginning, the Post's program
has depended on the interests of its members. Our goal is to have fun in
the outdoors, in all kinds of weather, and try as many activities as we
have interests.
We are chartered by the Fox Mill Homeowners Association. Carolyn Peacock
is the senior Adult Advisor. She comes to us from the original Girl Scout
Troop 124. The committee is chaired by David
Peacock, former Scoutmaster of BSA
Troop 157. We have members from Herndon
High School, South Lakes High School, Oakton
High School, Northern Virginia Community College, George
Mason University, even as far as Virginia
Tech! The group ranges in age from 14 to 21, and all are welcome!
